New Woodland Takes Root in Wychnor

Montgomery Wood offers visitors fantastic views across the River Trent to Wychnor, with stunning views of St Leonard's parish church. This 2.3ha (5.7 acre) wood has been created by local businessman Chris Montgomery who runs a landscaping business based in Burton. Chris bought the land a few years ago and decided to create the woodland under the National Forest Changing Landscapes Scheme to provide wildlife habitat, access and wood for fuel.

Appointments to the Board of the National Forest Company

Defra Minister, Dan Rogerson, has confirmed reappointments to the Board of the National Forest Company (NFC). Catherine Graham-Harrison OBE has been reappointed as Chair for a further two years from April 2014 whilst Roger Clarke has been reappointed as a Non-executive Director for a further two years. Both were appointed to the Board in April 2011 for a three year term of office.

Visitors to woodlands during the autumn will discover trees laden with edible delights. In September and October, the number of different ripe species explodes with fungi, fruits and nuts, such as beech nuts, bramble, hawthorn berries, juniper and rosehip, ready for picking. This year apparently the horseradish is particularly good!

The prestigious Institute of Chartered Foresters is bringing its 2008 National Study Tour to the Forest, from 15 – 17 October.
